Monday

4pm start and feeling refreshed. I chose to sleep in today due to the fact I have been working hard this month. The chat group is growing and has several new mid-stakes grinders I will be excited to learn from and help when possible. I am going to play most of my normal schedule and make good decisions with emotional detachment, GL ME, updates later.
Cashed in 4 out of 31 MTTs with one FT in the 5r 50k on Stars. I had a decent day overall and was able to come out unscaved and even for the day. It is now time to make some grub and relax.

Sunday Shipaments

1pm start and last day of UBOC and double guarantee on FTP. Let's grind, GL ME, updates later.
Cashed in 10 out of 59 MTTs  including a deep run in the Double Deuce, it had 27,543 players and I got 31st. Oddly enough I had a deep run in the $11 1/4 mill on Stars once and got 31st then as well and that field was a little bigger. I had a couple other deep runs but did not get winner on the day.
I still had a good day as far as attitude and improvement and am glad I keep growing as a poker player. I am having lessons with shanetrain22 early in Feb. and I am ready to work hard and take another step in my game.
Every time I start multi-tasking instead of focusing on poker I catch myself and think of this chat session hosted by Ajkhoosier on Pxf where he talked about distractions while you're playing and ways to avoid them and focus more. His chat has helped me more than I thought and the things he spoke of has me slowly adapting to a more focused less distracted gear while I play. I had already taken some steps, but am now taking more to lessen distractions.
I have been playing a ton with the contests on P5s earlier this month, then the UBOC and double guarantee week created such value that high volume was important. It was a great month for me, actually my best ever and I want to celebrate by taking some lessons and working even harder. I will probably take a day off or two this week and have been enjoying some quality steaks on the foreman so I am not over doing it, I just have some goals I plan on reaching and am very hungry to do so. GL ME.
Thanks to anyone who reads the blog, I hope you enjoy it as mush as I do.

How I Improved

I am lucky enough to have a good work ethic and a positive attitude, but I would like to tell you about the things that helped me along the way. At first in September 2009 it was my friend kurt4646/mr kurt that helped me with some thoughts on BRM that helped me finish the year a little positive. It was my first time to show positive results for the year on OPR. He also helped me with poker itself by discussing hands. Until March 2010 I had played online poker in spurts, and had moderate winning weeks but due to poor BRM I always ended up broke or cashed out the winnings but was not ahead overall. In March after getting $2500 for 2nd in the All-Around Contest they had during the Oklahoma State Championship of Poker I bought a new macbookpro and deposited some money on AP to begin playing with rakeback. I had never played with rakeback before and thought it could help. When I started playing on AP I was playing .25/.50 plo and got about $500 winner pretty fast. Then I binked the first MTT I played on AP, the $11 5k Sniper for about $1500. I then started trying to play micro MTTs across Stars, FTP and AP. At first AP was funding all three accounts but I was slowly improving thanks to the chat group, PxF videos and PxF chat sessions. I also took a two hour lesson with Chris "Fox" Wallace that was helpful as well. I eventually began winning on Stars as well and my BR kept growing. I got to 10k and then decided after a bit of a downswing I wanted to try some cash games. I played 1/2 NL on AP for about a week getting up a couple thousand and then losing it back slowly. What this truly taught me is to be stronger and finish what I stared and keep improving at MTTs.
When I got to 10k I let my BR chose the level I was playing, from abi 11 to abi 25, and it caused me to move up before I was ready. I lost a few thousand and lowered my stakes some. The next time I got my BR back up to 10k I kept playing the same levels and focused on improvement not letting my BR control me. I eventually got to 20k and started to slowly move up by taking my cheapest few MTTs of the day out, and replacing them with a higher buy in. This worked great and I kept building my roll by playing daily with strong work ethic, BRM, Pxf, TPE, skype chat group and a positive attitude. Over the next few months I kept slowly moving up and maintaing my roll.
2011, it's January and there is two awesome team contests on P5s. I join both and end up on a great team in the mid-stakes and as capt drafted a good team for the low-stakes. The mid started the 1st but the low started over a week later. I was lucky enough to be teamed with Goldenad and Shanetrain22. Right from the start we were all hitting scores and chatting on aim some and they were both very helpful and felt myself improving even more. Then I had the best weekend ever Jan. 21. I got 2nd in UBOC 12 for 11.6k, the next day I won the 26 33k for 9.8k and then Monday I got 2nd in the NHG on Stars for 17.6k. Along with these scores I had several other that helped in the contests and Goldenad, Shanetrain, and dakidoniiiii absolutely pwned and we won the mid-stakes for $3k a man. It was an awesome few days and I was excited to find out P5s wanted to do an article on me and TPE did an awesome five question interview as well. The score on FTP helped me to get winner on FTP for the first time, and I am now winner on all the sites I play. Now feeling that all the hard work is starting to pay off my only goal is to keep working hard, improve daily, stay positive at all times, and keep making money. I am writing this on Saturday Jan. 29th after coming in 4th in the 55 50k on FTP for 5k and really feel if I keep at it that nothing but good things is in store for me. I really hope you enjoy reading the blog and good luck on the tables.

Saturday

2pm start and ready to work, updates later.
Cashed in 7 out of 33 MTTs with a 4th in the $55 50k on FTP. It was a great day overall filled with positive energy and a helpful chat group. My session ended earlier than normal due to being at a FT of one of the earlier MTTs I starts so I stopped registering to increase the amount of focus I could give the FT and the other few MTTs I was deep in. Now time for some rest and then a big Sunday, GL ME.

1/28/2011

Friday

2pm start and ready for a positive day filled with poker volume. I will be playing most of my normal schedule with some MTTs taken out so that I can get more FTP double guarantee tables up. Double guarantee week has been awesome and the MET experience is quite interesting. I know at first I was not a fan and still wish that FTP would quit re-inventing the wheel, but it has been an interesting week thus far. Well, break is over, back to the grind, updates later.
Cashed in 11 out of 51 MTTs but was not able to get ahead for the day. I played pretty well overall but made a marginal decision or two at the end of the night that I will reflect on to improve. The chat room is off the charts with several new members that play real well and grind a lot like I do. I am very excited to see our progress over the next few months.
I got to preview the P5s article Dan wrote and it is great, I think it will be up soon, thanks Dan.
Still a couple days left of double guarantee week and UBOc so more grinding to come, GL ME.

1/27/2011

Thursday

2pm start and feeling very good, updates later.
Cashed in 5 out of 49 MTTs with two FTs but was not able to get ahead for the day. I did have a decent day overall and I feel that my poker game is coming along nicely. I have been posting more and more on P5s and trying to use the recent vamp in my popularity to possibly help some poker players and start to get my name out there for coaching in the future. Although I am amazed at how many of the ranked players that were arguing about being positive or just finding something to knit pick on in the thread instead of offering something useful. I just kept replying and wishing them all well. Lots more grinding to come with the rest of the double guarantee week on FTP, GL ME.

Wednesday

2pm start, updates later.
Cashed in 8 out of 57 MTTs with one FT and a win n the 20r 7.5k on AP. I had a good day overall and am enjoying the double guarantee week on FTP and the UBOC/Mini-UBOC on AP.
I have also been getting some exposure and was ask to do a Q&A Article on TPE and P5s is doing an article on me too, so cool. I have also taken this opportunity to express my thoughts on positive attitude and poker in a thread on P5s. http://www.pocketfives.com/f7/reasons-my-success-617302/
I am hoping to one day coach poker, I miss teaching pool and training dealers, teaching is fun. Well, now it is time to watch a little DVR and wind down so I can get up and do it all again, I love my life.

"Positivity"

Yes, positivity and negativity are both infectious, contagious life forms with a mind of their own. If you or someone around you or even someone in a chat group is negative, you will notice that others or maybe even yourself will begin to feel more negative. But, if you are positive, or around someone positive the same will happen and you will feel and be more positive. In all actuality its just a simple choice everyone can make to be more positive and keep negativity away.

I know when I was in sales that they taught me to fight off every "NO" with ten "Yes". I treat positivity the same way. When someone around me or in my chat group is negative they are usually immediately riddled with ten more positive thoughts. No one wants to be multi-tabling and feeling good and then see a bad beat HH, or hear about some suck out. In my chat I like to post hands I have a question on and hands that make you feel positive. I completely try to avoid ever posting a bad beat because it makes the beat linger and unleashes some negativity. I will admit that I do occasionally slip up, but have surrounded myself with positive guys that whip me right back in line.

Positivity is key to be a winning poker player, good luck!

Reasons for my success

Of course there is the OBV fundamental things that you learn from training sites, books, and lots of trial and error, but I believe it is something else. I am a strong believer in positive attitude and positive surroundings. I also think that emotional detachment is very important but will be a forever improving process. One of the things I try to tell myself when I take a beat is, if ten other players took the same beat, would I have handled it the best? Also sometime I try to imagine the ten most important people I know watching and try and act accordingly. I think that negativity and to much emotion in poker can consume you and make the game intolerable. In my opinion, these things are just as important as understanding stack sizes and re-steals. Good luck to everyone in the future and remember that positivity is key!

Tuesday

5pm start after a haircut and getting some grub, ready to rock. Updates later.
Cashed in 4 out of 36 MTTs with one FT in 112r1a 7.5k on Stars. It was a great day overall, I played all day with a glow about me from my recent success, what a week! I have so many things on my mind now that I am showing success but I know for he most part I will keep knitting it up a little and protect my roll while slowly moving up in stakes and trying to be as professional as possible. I have been trying to network myself out there with my blog, the chat group, P5s, PXF, TPE, and by always being friendly at the tables knowing that someday I will probably have a training site or be a pro on a site and I want a good solid start and reputation to build on. I really enjoy what I do and plan on making poker a big part of my life for years to come. I also got some feedback from a friend that reads my blog and plan on trying to provide more content than just my daily progress report. Although I do like putting in my daily figures to show insight into the amount of volume some regs play.
Be on the lookout for an article about me on pocketfives.com and I did a small interview for tournamentpokeredge.com. i'll provide links when they are complete.

Let's crush 2011, GL ME!

1/24/2011

Monday!

2pm start and feeling okay. I just did my first interview with P5s and it was awesome, thanks Dan. The interview was awesome and I was so humbled that P5s asked me. Updates later.
Cashed in 4 out of 48 MTTs with one FT in the $162 Nightly Hundred Grand for 2nd place. I have had an amazing week with a new hi score Friday, then another big score Saturday, and then two days later top my high score again, wow. The FT tonight was super sick with gboro, little kraut and pipedream. I had a blast and am quite pleased with my performance.
I did set up some more coaching with shanetrain22 for first of next month, got to keep improving and I think he can help. Hopefully a lot more to come from me in the future, good luck everyone, and GL ME!

1/23/2011

Sunday

12pm start ready to try and crush the last day of the P5s contest. Updates later.
Cashed in 7 out of 48 MTTs with one FT. I took several shots today but did not manage a good result which made the day pretty expensive. Luckily my team finished strong in the midstakes contest and I believe we will win. Big congrats to goldenad and shanetrain for their score today. Shanetrain probably put it out of reach by shipping the 75 40k on ftp for 18k and 291pts. It has been a great Januarary so far and I am excited about the continual progression of my game. More to come....

1/22/2011

Saturday

1pm start and ready to rock out with my ____ out! Had an awesome day yesterday and I feel good! Updates later.
Cashed in 3 out of 39 MTTs but was lucky enough to win the $26 33k ko on FTP. What an awesome couple of days, wow. The FT was brutal, the stacks are shallow and there is so much shoving. I got ul 4 handed and went from 2 of 4 to 4 of 4 and at that exact moment the last guy to check discuss deal decided to discuss a deal and I went into the deal discussion short, I asked for more than they were offering and when they said no we played it out.
I would like to throw another be THANKS out to shanetrain22 for all the help recently. He is a great coach if anyone is looking for coaching. And now I will soak in this victory some and prepare for another big day tomorrow, GL ME.

1/21/2011

Friday

1:30pm start and I am excited about playing good today. I had a decent day yesterday and I am hoping for an even better one today. Updates later.
Cashed in 6 out of 39 MTTs with two FTs. I got 2nd in the $22 5k Big Ante on Stars, and I got 2nd in the $162 75k UBOC 12 Sniper on AP. In the UBOC 12 we chip chopped three handed and played it  out for an additional 1.5k. I decided to get aggressive after we chopped and do everything in my power to get that extra money. I started picking up chips quickly and made it HU without much trouble. Hu was a little but of a battle and my opponent started with a 2 to 1 chip lead. I had taken the chip lead with in about five minutes then lost all in pre flop AK to 104s, oh well, I got it in good and had a good day. It was an awesome day overall and I feel that I played very well.
One of the big differences in my game as of late has come from the help of shanetrain22, I was lucky enough to be on his team in the midstakes comp on P5s and he has helped me on AIM several days. Shanetrain22 is very good at making poker easy to understand. If any poker players that read my blog are interested in coaching he would be a great choice.
I still have a couple days left of the P5s contest and need to get to sleep so I can get some major volume in this weekend, GL ME.

1/20/2011

Thursday

1:30pm start and ready to have a productive day. There is quite a bit of fresh snow on the ground and I will not be leaving my pad till the snow disappears. My plan for the day is to reduce distractions and increase focus and emotional detachment, updates later.
Cashed in 8 out of 44 MTTs with one FT in the 5r 12k on FTP. It was another day full of deep runs and close calls but I know if I keep at it and try to work on my game the scores will come. Only a couple days left of the midstakes contest on P5s and we are a few points behind so a big score soon would be nice. GL ME

1/19/2011

Wednesday

2pm start and feeling good about poker today. I also had a nice chat with kurt4646/mr kurt and really enjoyed catching up, good job in Durant bro. Playing pretty much my normal schedule today and hoping for great results.
Well, I am down to my last 4 MTTs of the day and plan on trying my hardest and using emotional detachment. I just got 13th in a 55 40k on stars and it makes my 4th or 5th real deep run that was ended by a dirty river when way ahead of recent. I will not let it get me down, GL ME in these last 4, updates later.
Cashed in 6 out of 34 MTTs with a couple deep runs but could not get winner. I was proud of the way I battled at the end of the night in my last few MTTs after taking some horrid beats deep. I will admit I was a little but tilted for a bit, but I do think I was able to overcome it.
After listening to Ajkhoosier talk about distractions the other day in his chat session, I keep thinking I have to many. I have done lots of things to reduce distractions while I play but the amount of focus needed to truly play well is definitely taken for granted. This is something I am going to make sure I am paying more attention to in the future. I currently play without television and am usually home alone, but I do have skype chat going, could be trolling P5s, PxF, TPE, and occasionally take phone calls. I mentioned something to him about the fact I play very high volume and the chat group helps, he countered with I probably play to much. I know volume is very important, and in many ways may be the most important thing, but is there a point where you can be playing so much its hurting you. I would think volume is more of a "to each is own" type of thing, meaning that some can handle more than others. I believe poker is tough and demanding, but I enjoy the challenge, GL ME.

1/18/2011

Tuesday

2pm start with a more positive attitude and ready to battle any adversity I could face. I am hoping to gather some good results tonight for the two P5's contests that only have a few days left, we are fourth in one and tenth in the other but not out of it. Updates later
Cashed in 8 out of 45 MTTs but was unlucky in a few important spots and ended the day quite a bit loser. I have been in a small rut for a week or so and plan to fight out of it with hard work and perseverance. GL ME

information brief.

I am John Reynolds a 34 yr old poker grinder/ex pool player. I played pool for a living until 2005 when poker was legalized in Oklahoma then the whole pool hall got a job at the casino. I had been at the casino five months when I was heading to work on my new motorcycle when a car turned in front and put me in the hospital for four months. I am now in a wheelchair but doing great. I stayed at the casino for three years after the accident working in the poker department as a Sr. Floor and dealer trainer and playing poker in my off time. I was a winning live player but was losing online except for that occasional run, I knew nothing about BRM coming from the pool hall where most guys are broke and gambling with every dollar they have. In 2008 I lost my job and started playing live poker full time, mostly grinding 1/2 and 2/5 nl and the occasional MTT. I did okay but my lack of BRM would catch me from time to time. In march 2010 I had a good live series at the Oklahoma State Championship of poker used the money to replace my broken laptop with a new macbookpro, and decided to give online poker another shot. I started doing what I always did, depositing about two hundred on stars or full tilt and play thirty and under MTTs. I didn't get a great start and was looking for ways to beat online, I was sure if I had rakeback that would do it, lol. So I started an account on AP with rakeback and had to use a new name because I had an old UB account with my main name on it and no RB on UB, I know it's not a big deal but I liked having just one name. Anyway, I started playing .25/.50 plo 6max on AP and got pumped up to $500 pretty quick, then decided I would play an MTT. I entered the $11 5k Sniper on AP and won the first MTT I played their, go me. I kept doing okay and started playing on AP, stars, and FT. At first AP was keeping me a float but then I started making money on all three.
It took a while but I finally started to figure out that I was not doing enough to get better. I kept hearing in interviews and podcasts that a poker chat group and talking poker with friends is very important. So I made a post on P5s about wanting to start a poker chat group.
http://www.pocketfives.com/f7/decent...mprove-586577/
I was able to get a chat group started on Aim and we eventually moved to skype, but my game began to improve immediately. Then someone in the chat mentioned PxF and I have been a subscriber ever since. It was a long haul and I finally learned BRM and through lots of trial and error, poker videos, one two hour lesson, lots of HHs discussed, and tons of volume I believe I am on my way.
2010 was a great year and I could not be happier. I set out on a mission to build a BR and improve my game, and I took huge leaps. I am planning on making 2011 better, GL ME!

Monday

Well, Friday was meh, I took Saturday off, and then Sunday was meh. Today was started with a trip to the cellular repair store, and luckily was a successful trip. My iphone was fixed for $65 and works good as new. It did take a half to fix, but that gave me time to visit the pool hall and catch up with a few people.
Starting a poker session at 5pm, and I will be playing the mini uboc's at 7pm. Updates later.
Cashed in 2 out of 23 MTTs with 1 FT. In reflection I wish I hadn't started my day by saying that some other days were meh, why would I want to be thinking in the past. Just do your best everyday. I believe it's all part of the learning process, I am glad that I pick up on things faster and faster. I will be taking a more positive approach tomorrow and plan on continuing my high volume for Jan., GL ME.

1/16/2011

Sunday

12pm start and ready to rock. Took yesterday off and feel a little refreshed, sometimes a nice day of relaxing does the body good. Congrats to Galen Hall on his PCA win, I don't know him but he did play well, I watched the entire coverage. Well, its time to grind, updates later.
Cashed in 3 out of 31 MTTs with no good finishes. Also I dropped my iphone in water, it is in a bowl of rice now, and I will take it for repair tomorrow. GL ME

1/15/2011

Saturday

Slept in a little after watching two movies after my session yesterday, I woke up and was going to late reg my the start of my schedule but I missed the 22c by 3 seconds and decided to take the day off. I really needed a little time away anyway. I took those movies back and got tow more, but spent the day watching football and the PCA coverage on ESPN3. I am thinking of finding a coach and taking a couple lessons this week, I'll think on it more. I will spend the rest of the might relaxing and then plan on a big sunday, GL ME.

1/14/2011

Friday

2pm start ready to grind, updates later.
Well, it was kind of a rough day, I cashed in 6 out of 44 MTTs but all were min cashes. Luckily I realize it is all part of it and I have been here several times before. NowI just need to make sure I am working on my game, watching some videos, reviewing hands with the chat group, and trying to stay healthy and sharp. I will also take the top few buy-ins out of my schedule for a couple days and try to grind back, not look for some quick fix, I think this is very important if on any kind of a downswing. Okay, now time for a movie and some relaxing, still lots of volume needed for the contests on P5s this month, GL ME.

Friday

Online PokerI have registered to play in the PokerStars World Blogger Championship of Online Poker! The WBCOOP is a free online Poker tournament open to all Bloggers, so register on WBCOOP to play.

1/13/2011

Thursday

2pm start, GRINDING, updates later.
Cashed in 7 out of 42 MTTs but only one FT in a small MTT so not the best outcome overall. My teams are gathering points in the contests on P5s and we are hanging in there, 2nd in one and 9th in the other with still lots of time to play.
There was a great chat session on PxF today hosted by Ajkhoosier that I really enjoyed, the chat sessions definitely set that site apart from the rest. Ajk touched on several points I want to work on in the immediate future. 2011 will be a special year! GL ME.

1/12/2011

Wednesday

1pm start and ready to do work. I am still doing some schedule adjusting but enjoying the challenge of midstakes. Updates later.
Cashed in 6 out of 43 MTTs with one FT in 15r 5k on AP. It was a decent night and I am glad to report that my midstakes team is still leading, GO US. More grinding to come

1/11/2011

Tuesday

2pm start, going to focus hard on better decision making and review several hands with friends. Updates later.
Cashed in 6 out 40 MTTs and 0 out of 2 45mans. I had a couple deep runs but couldn't get past the important race. Team roi rogers is still leading the midstakes contest which is awesome, but team obv ftw needs to put more volume in for the lowstakes contest. I am hopingI can do enough to help one or both teams win.
Today I was making better decisions at the poker table and also asking better questions. I posted several hands in the chat that were very beneficial to discuss. Lots more volume coming this month, glad I am on a good sleep schedule, and have been taking vitamins again for about a week now. I really believe to be successful at poker you have to take it serious and treat it like a job. It's obviously the greatest job ever, but none the less a job. Until tomorrow, same bat time, same bat channel.

Monday

1pm start, updates later.
Cashed in 6 out of 48 MTTs and had a couple deep runs with one FT. I had the CL with only a few players left but lost some key races when ahead and had to settle for 3rd. The contests are going well and I am getting lucky enough to meet a few more cool poker players. Still lots of volume to be put in this month, GL ME.

1/09/2011

Sunday

Noon start and feeling like making some loot. Going to play some majors today and try to get some points for the team comps as well.
Some of my focus points for the day will be decision making, emotional detachment, focus with few distractions, and as always shove charts when needed, GL ME, updates later.
Cashed in 4 out of 37 MTTs with no big scores or deep runs, I did get 25th in the major on AP but that was my best finish. Overall it was a decent day and I was able to see some of my mistakes as I made them and hope to continue fixing them. It will be a busy month and I am ready to tackle it, GL ME.

1/08/2011

Saturday

1pm start and ready to continue to improve my decision making and emotional detachment, hoping for a great day, updates later.
Cashed in 5 out of 41 MTTs with one win the the 5r 5k on AP. Overall a decent day and I am still improving. Our midstakes team is winning and the lowstakes started at midnight so it will be lots of grinding this month, GL ME.

1/07/2011

Friday

1pm start feeling good, updates later.
Cashed in 5 out of 40 MTTs with two FTs and one pretty good score on FTP. Also my teammates in the midstakes comp on P5's are doing great so we are currently in the lead, GL US. I was able to talk a few hands over with the chat group and some of my teammates and I am happy to say I am constantly improving and plan to keep striving for that. I will be playing lots of volume this month and this year for that matter so hoping for good things.

1/06/2011

Thursday

Laundry day, ugh, so poker got to kick off at 5pm, but I am ready to rumble. Also it is the draft night for the 2nd contest I am in on P5s, I am hoping for a good team. I might possibly be a captain so it would be up to me, GL US. Updates later.
Cashed in 2 out of 23 MTTs but both the cashes were FTs, unfortunately I was not able to win either. I did pick a good team in the draft on P5s tonight and will be excited to play the contest. Also the 2 FTs from tonight will help in the contest I am already in. More grinding to come, GL ME.

1/05/2011

Wednesday

1pm start and feeling better today than I have in a couple, not physically but mentally from all the work the world of poker at a high level entails. I have lots of drive and determination and am able to wake up daily and be excited to get to work. Some of the small struggles I have battled recently have nothing to do with wanting to play each day, and everything to do with keeping complete focus and concentration at the end of a tough session. One of the ways I deal with problems I wan to fix is to talk about them and get them in the open, in a way its like admitting your faults so you can fix them. So my plan is to keep grinding through 2011 while trying to maintain and build my BR and expand and improve my game. For tonight I will settle with making good decisions. Updates later.
Cashed in 5 out of 39 MTTs and 3 of 21 45 mans, I felt good and played good but was not able to pull good results, better luck tomorrow.

1/04/2011

Tuesday

1pm start and played 34 mtts with 6 cashes and one final table. Ended my session early to watch the Arkansas game and make a steak for me and a friend. Back to the grind tomorrow.
